I’ve had a slow start this month. I’m moving on to my 3rd book for book club after struggling with two earlier choices. I’m starting The Five: The Untold Lives of the Women Killed by Jack the Ripper by Hallie Rubenhold which was recommended to me.

I do want to recommend a recent five star read: Tattoos on the Heart: The Power of Boundless Compassion by Gregory Boyle. A true story about the author's journey as a Jesuit priest. He helped found Homeboy Industries, which provides jobs and housing to former gang members in Los Angeles. This inspirational book is told through the lens of Father Boyle's work with gang members where he sees the power that faith can have on people's lives. If you are drawn to stories about overcoming adversity and finding hope for the future despite difficult circumstances, this is an outstanding choice.

“You stand with the least likely to succeed until success is succeeded by something more valuable: kinship. You stand with the belligerent, the surly, and the badly behaved until bad behavior is recognized for the language it is: the vocabulary of the deeply wounded and of those whose burdens are more than they can bear.”

― Gregory Boyle, Tattoos on the Heart: The Power of Boundless Compassion

The LA Public library is celebrating its 150th anniversary with 150 days of activities and events. I love the poster they created - do you think you could read all 150 books listed? Get the list here.

I recently heard about Irish potato candy. It’s a sweet snack that—despite the name—has absolutely no potato in it. Unless you’re from Philly, you’re probably unfamiliar with the cream cheese–based confection. Have you had it? I’m planning to make it for St. Patrick’s day and I’ll report back!
